My transmission went south and looking to buy a used replacement. Mine is a code 020 AGS. Which is better, the AGS or the AWY; or even a ASF?
Anyone have one for sale?

Re: white smoke on startup
No I haven't. Why would a glow plug act differently when installed than what it does uninstalled?
BTW, I can manually operate the glow plugs and it appears to significantly shorten the time that the engine smokes.

Re: white smoke on startup
The lifters are hydraulic.
All four glow plugs are working well.
Ran the block heater this morning for 45 minutes. Engine started on all four cylinders and absolutely no smoke.
I have clear lines going into the injection pump but not on the exit.

Re: white smoke on startup
I suspect poor combustion in one way or another. Timing is right on, injectors were rebuilt and tuned about a year ago and didn't change the smoke issue last winter, I have run clear fuel lines for many years now and pulling out the cold start doesn't change the smoke. When it's 40 degrees out it pr...

white smoke on startup
In this colder weather my Jetta smokes white smoke and runs rough when first started. Acts like it's running on three cylinders at first. I recently installed new rings about 750 miles ago. Once the motor warms up it smooths out (running on all four) and runs great with no smoke. Anyone have an idea...

Re: Wheel Growling Noise
Turned out it was both rear wheel bearings. Left one was the worst and right one starting to make growling noise. Replaced both.

Wheel Growling Noise
My '89 Jetta has developed a growling noise. Driving down the road at anywhere between 40 and 70 it growls like I'm running big nobby tires. If on the highway and I change from the right lane to the left lane I turn the steering wheel a bit to the left and the growling goes away momentarily, until I...

Motor Mount
Rear motor mount, passenger side: how much should it move? I can rotate mine by hand about 1/2 to 3/4 inch forward and back. Does this seem right?

Which is easier
Engine is out of my '89 Jetta getting new rings. Is it easier to install the engine without the intake manifold and then install it afterwards? Or is it easier to connect the intake manifold first and then install the engine?

Re: Compression test
BTW, the compression numbers are 50, 440, 280 and 500. I squirted some oil into the one that was at 50 and re-checked the compression. Moved it up to 260 psi. I flipped the head over and applied some thin oil onto the valves. Shot 60 psi of air pressure into head through the exhaust manifold with ea...

Re: Compression test
Okay, Plastigage first. I take it I may find that I only need to do the rod bearings. That would be closer to my comfort zone. I have a pretty nice VDO 0 to 150 psi oil pressure gauge installed in my Jetta. I'm considering to do the bearings because years ago it would show 115 psi when cold at idle ...

Re: Compression test
I'm getting bad compression numbers on my 1.6na in the '89 Jetta. I think it's time for a re-ring. About 9 years ago I did a re-ring on a 1.6na. It went well and the engine ran great. I've never replaced bearings though. Is it conceivable that someone like me can install new bearings in a 1.6na? I l...

Compression test
Does cranking speed affect compression test? Seems like mine is rolling over kind of slowly.
