Test engine compression

I bought an extra engine for my Jetta. The current one is getting tired; it has close to 400,000 miles on. Two cylinders are down to about 360 psi. I want to test the compression on this 2nd engine before installing it into the car. But it doesn't have an injection pump on it. Is there some way to d...

Re: oil leak between head and block

All fixed and running good. It turns out I did not have oil gushing out the top of the oil dipstick tube; it just looked like it. At the top of the oil filter mount I have a 1/8" inch nylon tube installed that runs to my mechanical oil pressure gauge at the dashboard. I must have damaged this t...

Re: oil leak between head and block

But it didn't pump oil out the dipstick before I installed the new head gasket. And there's a lot coming up and out. When I had the previous HG in only just a tiny bit of oil was spurting from between the head and the block and that is why I changed the HG. Is it really that having a new HG is makin...

Re: oil leak between head and block

Installed the new head gasket. Got the right one, a two hole, from Jack. Started it today. Hard starting but finally did. Seems to run okay and the timing work went well. The problem though is that oil is being pushed from the crankcase up and out the dip stick hole. Didn't do that before. What coul...

Re: oil leak between head and block

I guess those two reasons are enough, I'll send it back to Jack and ask him to send the one I ordered.

Re: oil leak between head and block

Well, I wonder how much difference does it make to use a 3 hole HG instead of the 2 hole one.

Re: oil leak between head and block

I wonder if the ones with the notches are for mechanical lifter engines only. Mine is hydraulic lifters and now I see that he has a separate price for head gaskets - hydraulic. I suppose that's the one I need. The head is off. The remaining portion of the broken bolt came out easily.

Re: oil leak between head and block

I forget which head gasket to buy from Jack. He lists one notch, two notch and three notch. Do these three relate to the mechanical head engines only?

Re: oil leak between head and block

Last winter around here was pretty rough. Didn't work on the Jetta; just drove it. Here it is August of 2014 and I finally got around to attempting to re-torque the head bolts. I say attempt because it went well up until number 9. It broke off about 2-1/4" down from the top of the bolt. Both 9 ...

Re: New guy; pulling hair out

I don't recall that you verified that the Injection Pump was full of fuel and that you "bottle-fed" it. Been experience this technique bypasses lots of questions and proves the engine will or won't run. But, maybe I missed that part of the conversation.

Re: Glow Plugs not working

So I went all through the GP system. Cleaned the connections, soldered the terminals, installed heatshrink tubing, new fuses. Even removed all the GPs and checked them and removed the Injectors and did compression tests. Two cylinders are a little low. I reassembled everything and all works well. St...

Re: Glow Plugs not working

I'm electrically illiterate. It's my weakest area of knowledge. I wouldn't know where to even look for answer to this question. I thought the ammeter is just connected inline on the positive wire. On that idea, does it need to be grounded?

Glow Plugs not working

My old Jetta has a manual glow plug set-up. It uses the relay from the original diesel donor car. I have installed a fuse panel, manual activation button and wiring similar to Vince Waldons pimped glow plug system. This set-up has been working excellent for the past year. Suddenly it's not. So I've ...

Re: heated driver seat

Maybe I'll see if I can buy the various heated seat components on Ebay and install them into my existing seat. (I doubt Jack handles this kind of stuff) Or maybe on top of the existing seat; cover it with an aftermarket seatcover.
