Point taken. :) Is there a place other than the dealer to get that red/white heavy gauge wire? The starter cable also has a heavy...

That's a good idea to put the battery under the seat. I'll look into that.
Is a simple resistance check with my multimeter an accurate gauge of wire condition? What is the resistance of a good wire?

Diesel conversion. Relocate battery?

I've got my 1.6 TD engine on a jack in the engine bay of my ex-wbx. Tomorrow I'll bolt up the carrier bars. I'm thinking through adding the glow circuit. The stock diesel vanagon has the battery in the engine bay and mine is currently under the passenger seat. Should I relocate it to the engine bay?...

I'm not maried to the idea of tapping the block, but to aid in the vertical run, I could tap a brass elbow right into the trbo oil drain flange. That would put me about another 8mm uphill. I'll look at the engine tomorrow and see how much slope I'd get.

Turbo oil return - tap the block?

I'm installing a 1.6TD in place of the original waterboxer engine. Is there any reason why I couldn't tap one of the unused bosses on the block, just above the oilpan, for the turbo oil return? I know it wouldn't be as big as the AAZ oil return but I think I could tap in a brass fitting with a simil...

Thanks Andrew. That's exactly what I was looking for. How did you seal it at the block?

I just checked at the Dealer. $13 for the dipstick, great. $75 for the tube. Ouch!

I'll find another way.

Thanks VanagonExpress. So it's really just a hole with a seal for the dipstick? Maybe a larger hole with a sized rubber grommet would do the trick. Certainly easier than trying to source the right size tube and bending it to fit. Does the hole in the cap setup use the straight oil filler tube or the...

Dipstick add-on

I'm putting a jetta 1.6TD in my westy. The dipstick and tube from the jetta are way to short to check from behind the licence plate. Can I drill a hole in the oil filler cap and insert a long dipstick from the scrapyard or is there some sort of internal tube to guide it down the pipe?
