clacking valve/ Loss of power

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but the search results kinda went all over the place. I recently put a used 1.5 NA diesel into my caddy to get it going again. it ran decent for about a month or so but recently it started clacking and this causes it to be somewhat weaker. The frequency sound...

Re: Old guy Old Rabbit---both Happy.

I haven't been on these forums for about 3 or more years but after I fired up my caddy last night for the first time in as long I was stoked and came back to this site for more inspiration and was delighted to see this thread on the first page as I remember reading through pages of Hagar's tales bac...

I started reading the saga last year then they started monitoring internet at work and I try to spend as little time on the net while at home, too much else to do, but from what I read I can tell its a wealth of knowledge. Its at the top of my list of things to do if I break my leg and am forced to ...

Man , I feel bad not putting the ARP's in there as I vowed when I got this truck , i would use only the best so she would stay on the road longer then any new car. But right now I just have to get her back on the road to start saving me money. The head is n there now, I just need to finish up all th...

Sorry for the delayed response, it was a rare beautiful day here in Ohio and I was taking full advantage of it. As far as the length, they are maybe 1/8" shorter then the 6 points. I really wish I could bone up and get ARP's but Ill spare you the money woes and just say they really arent in the...

Head bolt question, 11mm 12 point?

Im putting another head back on my 81 caddy 1.6 and I ordered some new 11mm bolts for it. The bolts came, sure enough they are 11mm but they are the 12 point heads. Im thinking (from what Ive read)these were for a slightly later gasser. Also heard they were indeed stretch bolts and are an upgrade to...

OK well I'm an idiot. We got it in there. I dont know what it was but it it just seemed way far off that all the mounts would line up, but sure enough, one by one they did. All I needed was the confirmation that it will work so thanks.

The front motor mount, meaning the one that sits below the radiator. The Ball and socket deal, was pretty much lined together.
So the consensus is that it WILL fit? I guess Ill get a buddy over tonight and try again to fanagle it in there.

The code is 7A2 0034 It seems way to long because when I feed it into the bay tranny pointing down first the tail of the tranny is under the frame rail of the drivers side while the front engine mount is seated (engine still pointing upwards). Didn't put the mount on yet but have the different one r...

Tranny swap dilema

So I was under the impression that pretty much every older (lets say 80's) VW tranny was interchangeable. So I was stoked that when I aquired a large gaylord of several old diesel engines, two trannies and a bunch of other parts, that both trannies where 5 speeds. I pulled my motor in my 81 caddy an...

Compression testing an old motor.

I have a motor out back that I want to check if it is still good. It has not been in a car for I don't know how long, lets say 5-10 years. Between the Bently and the instructions with my compression tester it says, to check a motor, I have to get it up to operating temp. then crank it over 8 times w...

As far as i know the machine shop didnt do anything esle but shave it. I took it to them minus injectors, glow plugs and cam.

I am very careful when spraying ether, always last resort, small doses and no glow plugs.

Got some more time on it today. Double checked the timing, That was good. Filled up the fuel system and still no start, so we drug it down the road and after a while it kinda started but sounded like S***. We got it back to the garage and was able to start it by key And it sits there pop,pop,popping...
