I have recently purchased a 2001 jetta gls tdi and find it slow turning over when cold. It has low power compared to other's I have tried. It also has a flat acceleration spot throughout every gear. You're actually probably trying to remove the tensioner pully from the stud, while the stud is still threaded into the engine. There isn't the clearance to do this, typically.
