i was under the impression they changed pulleys later than 82, all the mk1s & mk2s ive seen have had that lip

it 'could' be the intermediate shaft 'lip' broke, this controls end-play for imshaft. the belt would then possibly be shredded by the lips of pulley. you have to take off lower timing cover to get to it, but if you remove top cover you can possibly check for play,,

help with a feel for the work helps in every way, takes 2 people for almost every part/avenue of work at one time or another, makes the work alot simpler. &quicker.
