Re: timing belt shredding!
it 'could' be the intermediate shaft 'lip' broke, this controls end-play for imshaft. the belt would then possibly be shredded by the lips of pulley. you have to take off lower timing cover to get to it, but if you remove top cover you can possibly check for play,,

Re: What's Wrong With My Brakes?
i not sure of tool; if its what i think it is; easily replaceable with a basting 'tool'. like you use for birds, funny its that day too :) , suck fluid all out of m/c reservoir, takes a few extra times to bleed, can be done for a couple of bucks and a can of dot3/4 brake fluid, and voila you have fr...

Re: What's Wrong With My Brakes?
maybe shot shoes; i had this prob a long time ago when i beat on a lemon. though when you had it apart you would have seen the thickness of shoe/pad. doing so much work i would have replaced most or all as the parts list indicates. having a pic or example to work off of helps alot as it can come apa...

Re: 79 vw 1.5l diesel problem
dont forget the feeler gauges, a couple of other tools you need but this goes farther when you actually loosen or change out a timing belt, timing belt tensioning tool, 300mm adj wrench. white out marks tdc for crank(thru trans cover at flywheel). if youve run atf thru inj pump; doing this you have ...

Re: 79 vw 1.5l diesel problem
run the atf thru inlet, for a while; bottle feed with diesel purge full can. can even mix in seafoam. use an inline filter. if you get it running sounds like a lot of other work to do if it hasnt been running for a while; i have a long laundry list of things to swap-out. such as timing belt, and tim...

Re: What kind of oil do you recommend for a cold climate?
on a hi-mileage car you have to be careful of changing over to a synthetic, if you havent regularly run synthetic in it you probably should look for a conventional oil to put in; syn oils normally out perform conv oils. over 70k miles on conv oil puts that out of the equation. 15w-40 can be cold sta...

0.94mm @inj pump may vary for your set-up; youll have to do some research for your motor-set up.

Re: setting injector pump timing by ear
i prefer setting static, dial gauge and all, 0.94mm dial@tdc works real good; i also havent touched my factory-set smoke screw and without cetane2 d( ), i cannt judge smoke as accurately. but at hi-rpm full throttle i start getting smokey. at lo-rpm usually little/no smoke. :mrgr...

Re: setting injector pump timing by ear
if your engine is running right; compression -good,& timing right on- youll hear a distinctive diesel clatter at a point of advance. then follow 82vdub's advice. im of the opinion to loosen both ends of inj lines and re-snug. if your engines not running quite as good i wouldnt do; it can be hard...
