Re: Odd diesel Rabbit starting problems

Just to beat the solenoid thing to death in case that's the issue: The fuel shutoff solenoid is the cylindrical thing on top of the IP that has a wire attached to it. With the hood up, you should be able to hear it click when the key is turned to "on". You may have to get your ear between ...

Re: Odd diesel Rabbit starting problems

Did you just say it sometimes dies for no apparent reason? If the electrical system was so sketchy it couldn't keep it running, it's unlikely it would ever start. Unless the problem was very intermittent. Stalling out makes me think the problem lies elsewhere. Have you tried putting the battery up f...

Re: wiper problem

There's a lot about the wipers in the Bentley. They are surprisingly complicated. So here's what I got from Bentley: Sounds like your park circuit is messed up, and it looks like park and intermittent are the same tab on the wiring connector at the wiper motor. Q- Does it park right sometimes? Or is...

Re: wiper problem

I had the wrong picture in my head- So the wipers travel an inch, then wait. Another inch, then wait. ? But works fine on slow and fast. So the motor is ok. It's weird that you had 2 relays that did different wrong things. So now your 4 settings are fast, slow, off, and stutter ? And they used to be...

Re: wiper problem

On intermittent, wipers go every 5 seconds or so. Maybe your old relay was bad? Did you pull out the piece of plastic in the switch that keeps you from selecting 'intermittent'?

Re: 1981 Rabbit pedal cluster removal

It is a tight fit, but I got a socket, U-joint, & short extension (1 or 2 inch) in there. Might've used a quarter inch socket set, but I don't think so. I didn't take the booster disk off.

Re: 1981 Rabbit pedal cluster removal

Supersisu, I had the same problem and did less than that. I left the brake lines attached and got the 3 brake servo nuts off with socket extensions (maybe U-joint?) and open-end wrenches. Then steps 3,4,&5. I took the driver seat out and set up some milk crates on the ground outside the door so ...

Re: My 1982 pickup wiring project

The dash cluster is powered through a 5 amp fuse labelled "radio". Gauges and warning lights won't work if it's blown. A short in any of the 18 circuits going into the cluster can blow the fuse. Hope that helps.

I got my wiper upgrade relay at a junkyard for a dollar. But you never know what you'll find.

Jack up the left front wheel and put it in 5th gear. Spinning the tire backwards or forwards will line you up.

Re: Fuel sender pieces wandered away

exploded diagram may not exist. Dealership didn't have one. Parts guy let me pick a free O-ring though. Put it back together according to best guess, found original O-ring, put sender back in, seems to work.

Fuel sender pieces wandered away

Does anybody have an exploded diagram for a 99.5 TDI fuel sender? There was (I think) grease in the diesel tank, it got wicked cold, there's brown jello in the sender. I'm doing something with my other hand and when I look back there's a spring on the ground. What I have: 2 plastic bushings and a sp...

I used 1" blue masking tape. Worked great, didn't look TOO bad. Got windshield replaced after six weeks, but when I took the tape off it was still in good shape.

If you've got $25 bucks, instead of buying a vacuum gauge, get a Mitey Vac. It has a gauge on it and will prime your fuel line, bleed your brakes, get oil into sealed bearings,... and probably other stuff too.
