Posting this in the general vs tdi thread as this is my old home and more of us look in this thread vs the TDI thread. Some background- I sold my 85 Golf a few years ago and have been driving a 02 civic since- im happy with its 40mpg. Wife has a 01 civic and I want to get her a more modern car with at least ABS and traction control (don't ask). Looking at 06 1.9's with the 6 speed DSG (I know) and a 2009 TDI2.0 sportwagon. I know over the years VW changes things such as the 2002 pd injectors and some are better than others. Any input on the choice between the older 1.9 and the new 2.0 with the DPF would be great- are both DSG transmissions the good dry clutch type that doesn't throw clutch material into the gear oil?

Sounds like the lost another one to the TDI, ha.

I when over to the dark side just over a year and a half ago. I still have some 1.6's around. I got into it on the cheap side with a rust belt car for 2200. It's really an experiment for me. To see if the electronics and maintenance cost are just to much for me. Well 50,000km so far so good. Maybe I will add to this later have to hit the road again.

after a few days of math. we decided on buying a closeout 13' Passat TDI. will save about $100 a month in fuel, so we made the purchase. Man this thing runs hot- I don't even want to know what the EGT temps are, pulled the thing into the cool garage and it rose the temperature in the garage 15 degrees!

the DSG is pretty sweet, and smart- when in a parking lot once brake lights go off it applies just a tad of clutch to simulate a standard torque converter creep. very smooth and best of all when you apply the brakes the ECU starts gently downshifting just enough to keep the injectors off

Just a 10K mile update, everything running perfectly. OBDII scan tool shows EGT temperatures around 850F in town and 1,250F during regeneration.
