Passat no power

My friends girlfriends 97 passat has no power she said it also smokes (black) alot . soome people I talked to said to check the EGR valve and some tube under the exhuast manifold. Any reply would help. thank you John

Remove the intake pieces and see if soot has built up. I've heard this is a common problem with some of the earlier TDIs.. soot buildup in the intake. Im fairly certain there is a post on here about soot buildup in the intake.. search around you may be able to find it. Another thing you may want to have her get checked is her EGR valve and make sure it is operating as it should.
