New Car or Not?

This forum is for TDI (Turbo Direct Injection) questions/posts. Non-TDI Motors (Including the 1.6, and 1.9 or other variant turbo diesel motors) should go in the VW Diesel General Forum

New Car or Not?

Post by josiah47 »

Hello People
right now i own the car in my sig.
but i am having a kid in march, so I would feel better with a newer car, and so would my wife.
I am looking at a TDI around the $8000 mark. 1999 a good year or not?
any suggestions would be helpful.
Thanks
Josiah

No one else replied so I will (just to run up my post count)

99 is a great year. The pre pump deuse cars have a lot of "mods" or tinkering you can do to them and are more Veggie freindly.

Do your homework first. 1999 will have fewer problems that 1999.5 and later but still plaqued with problems. tdiclub.com and you will see
maf air flow sensors
plugged manifolds
$1200 clutches dual mass
$1200 timing belts
drive by wire
computers
glow plug harness problems
etc.
Ask me how I know
I had one!!

No driving a 1993 1.9 idi passat. Simple and basic.

You will find many owners stating that using sythetic oil as required, and all the expensive maintenance and repairs offsets the fuel economy.

Try and find an injection pump or turbo cheaply

On tdiclub.com there are some who have had rad sensor leaks from plastic tank that goes down the wires to the ecu. VW solution is to replace all the wiring, after taking the car apart.

KISS
K it simple!!

98?

Does the '98 Jetta TDI have the same expensive problems as '99?
A friend might get one.
'91 Golf gasser converted to a 12mm pump, M-TDI.
'84 1.6TD Rabbit with a VNT-15 turbo, still setup to run on vegetable oil.
'84 GTI with 1.7TD pistons and intercooled.
2003 TDI wagon
2000 TDI Jetta.
