Does a 2002 VW Jetta 1.9 L TDI have an catalytic converter?

Fellas,

I have seen some info indicating some contradicting information on the existance of a catalytic converter on these engines, and wanted some clarification from the experts here. Thanks all!

all TDI's came from the factory with one. When the ecodiesels first came they were even supposed to have them.

Thanks for the info, that clears it up. I wonder how hot it gets on the catalytic converter surface? 1400 Deg F?

because it's diesel and even more so, a TDi i doubt it'll ever reach those kind of temps. There is a customer at the shop where i work and he has ALH TDI in his Pinzgauer and he never reaches temps more than 800oC at the exhaust manifold. basically on a TDI the convertor probably isn't even effective until it's been on the highway for a while. didn't stop me from installing one on my transporter though.

Since you know about these cars maybe you could answer this question. The other day I sprayed a very small amount of brakeClean into the intake at the EGR, and after a few seconds I noticed a white fog coming from the exhaust. I had thought I messed something up even though I didn't hear any strange sounds from the engine.

I descided to give the fog a little smell to see if that would help me determine where it was coming from. It had a peculiar smell, almost enough to take the air out of your lungs. I went ahead and revved up the engine to clear it out, which it did. I did this once more thinking maybe it was cleaning out the catalytic converter a bit. Since I have done this I havent noticed as much black smoke when I romp on it from the exhaust as I noticed before the brakeclean incident. It didn't take much spray to get the results, and I'm curious as to what exactly happened?

Well i guess you cleaned out some of the intake gunk , plus some residue coke in the convertor. Be careful using brake cleaner though, i would use intake cleaner. It's less dangerous to use as it has less alcohol , plus not while the motor is running. TDI's are notorious for getting clogged intakes and EGR/shut-off valves. The best way is remove them and hot-tanked or some other cleaning procedure. I personally wouldn't sweat it too much, unless you are getting a lack of power and suspect the intake .

The intake appears to have been replaced-nice and clean :) It must have been the Converter cleaning out then. Thanks for the reply, greatly appreciated!!

I have a 2003 Golf TDi. Under the hood, over the radiator is an emmisions decal that states there is a catalytic converter.I assume this would be true! If you car has a catalytic converter it would have the same decal. I have heard they are useless. A friend with a Dodge pickup with the Cummins turbo Diesel told me Models a year or two later than his Cummins diesel, the engine computer was programmed to dump a little extra fuel at the wrong time just to heat the Cat. This hurt MPG. People who can not do a good job running the government force catalytic converters in cars and V chips in TVs ! BAD means Broken As Designed (by Congress) ;-{

The first Passat TDI's here were supposed to have that very system. It got taken off the production line pretty quickly because i never saw one with that setup.
There is no reason not to have one as long as it's benign and doesn't need anything but heat to make them operate. Now the new Blue tech ones are gonna cause some real headaches for customers, service managers and mechanics. There is something like a throttle plate in the exhaust under the center of the car. That will last about 2 minutes in a Montreal winter.

Unless you want to kill your engine quickly, STOP spraying flammable liquid into the intake manifold! A little shot of brake cleaner this time obviously wasn't enough to cause a problem this time, but next time you may not be so lucky.

Diesel engines will burn any liquid that is flammable. The more flammable liquid that gets in there, the faster and hotter the engine will run. Many people have lost their TDI from a "runaway" condition. Usually a runaway is caused by failed seals in the turbo that allow the engine to ingest/combust the motor oil, but any flammable liquid could cause it.
