4 to 5 speed

Post by rod1e »

Got an 83, 1.6 transporter (vanagon?) 4-speed, thats leaking gearbox oil out of the clutch cover... Any advice on fitting an 89, 5-speed box? and any tricks to make the change over easier? Is it possible for a start??
Thanks...

This is what I just got from Long Enterprises.....

Hi John…thanks for your e-mail. We sell a full line of standard and high performance VW transmission parts, tools as well as completely rebuilt VW transmissions. As far as what to do for more speed (less RPM on the freeway) We can sell you a gas transaxle which has a much taller final drive ratio. We sell a premium quality rebuilt (not just reconditioned) transmission for that for $1150.00 exchange. In addition to new bearings (including pinion bearings), synchros, seals etc, all our rebuilt Vanagon transaxles receive many extras such as remachined sliders to prevent jumping out of gear. You also receive a 2 year unlimited mileage warranty. If you would like call me, we're open 9-5 Monday thru Friday Pacific time and I'll be happy to take you order or discuss it further with you. Thanks,

Rick Long

Subject: Diesel tranny

Hi -

I've a 1982 Diesel Westfalia with a 1.6 engine. It's terribly underpowered and can barely and rarely do 55 on the interstate. But I like engine okay around town, and I like it because so far it seems a solid machine -

But I really want more top end speed.

Is there a VW 5-speed that would go into this vehicle?

I'm still following up - and there is another thread on here regarding banding together to import some trannies - don't know much about that myself, yet.

Am convinced a Chevy small-block and a turbohydromatic 350 can solve these problems - well, all problems...pay no attention to me....
