Best Winter Oil Poll

Post by Anonymous »

I know this has been discussed recently, but I'd like to see a poll on the best winter oil you use and why (weight, synthetic/dino, brand). I'm mainly wondering about weight. By winter I mean -40 to -20 Celsius (Canadian winter). I drive a '97 Golf and wondering what oil is best for those frozen days.

I live in Bemidji MN and I use 5-30 or 5-20 Valvoline. It gets -40 f here for at least a week straight in the winter. I just have to worry about the fuel, even with additive.

Co-op DMO comes in all kinds of blends: 10w30, 15w40, 30w, 0w40, etc. The 0w40 stuff is synthetic and is relatively cheap for a synthetic. Last time I bought some it was $25 for 5L. Its sometimes hard to find: you might have to go to a big Co-op hardware store or a Co-op gas bar that caters to a lot of truckers.

I'm using the DMO 0w40 right now and its working out great. I use regular dino oil 15w40 in summer. Synthetic is always better in winter than compared to dino oil. 15w40 is like tar at -40°C.

Plus you're supporting domestic industries (you especially, being from SK).

Derek

PS: The XD3 stuff is really good too. A lot of heavy truck shops use it.

Has anyone used the Valvoline High Mileage Synthettic yet? If you have let me know what you think.

I mix the 15-50 with 3 in 1 oil and a can of WD40. It works well so far...
