1.6 Liter Diesel Injectioni Pump Priming!?

Post by gschluge »

I have a re-built 1.6 liter diesel that I just started. It is running on 2 cylinders. The problem is the diesel injection pump. I pulled the pump and gravity fed the fuel port, put a battery accross the fuel solenoid and turned the unit clockwise with a rachet. Sure enough, oil is only injected at the bottom two ports.

I got another pump out (Junkyard) and performed the same test, none of the ports produced oil.

Is there a secret to priming these pumps or are these two pumps junk? I really don't want to spend 400 bucks on a rebuilt pump.

A search would have probably concluded the best way is an outboard motor primer bulb.

I have tried several dry pumps. Never had any problems. They really do have to be turned over a lot to get the fuel flowing, though.

remove the "OUT" bolt and fill there, you will know when it's full when fuel goes out the lower bolt

failure rate is relatively low, usually just a seal that needs replaced.
if you can move the shaft in and out, that is bad!
