Your best bet is converting to a WBX version. I've done it.

I too looked high and low to find one; many places tried to sell me an '83 tank, which is plentiful, evidentally.

I called places all over the country, including wrecking yards, to try to find mine. I did eventually find one; this was over a year ago. Because this place isn't likely to compete AT ALL with our site's sponsor, I'll mention it here.

wayout salvage, (479) 665-4126. It's in kingston, arkansas.

They sent me a damaged used one, but I was able to repair it. It wasn't cheap.

Odds are good that they've not acquired another diesel vanagon in the time since I bought mine. In that case, your best bet is to search the internet like crazy for salvage yards, vw salvage yards, etc, and spend a day or two calling them all. That's how I found mine.

As I mentioned, I converted mine to a WBX tank. It took about 1/2 hour to convert and I would bet that my brand new WBX tank cost less than your broken used '82 tank. Also, it is readily available.

Oops, I thought you were suggesting an engine swap!

I'll search for any past posts you've made about the switcheroo.
