Magnets on CV-joint
I have about 4 magnets evenly spaced around the joint that mounts to the transaxle and a sensor mounted to obviously trigger from the magnets. The only problem is that I don't know what the heck they are for. I have looked in the Jetta Bentley manual but can't find anything about them. Does anyone know what they do:?

Yup... one of the more common after-market cruise controls is made by AudioVox and uses 4 magnets at the CV flange on the transmission to relay speed information to an electric activator/control unit that attaches to the throttle via a conventional cable.
Here's one installed in a Mazda that shows what the control switch and unit look like in case other parts linger in your car:

I have an after market cruise control manufactured by Dana. I got it from the Edmonton Pickupart for 15 bucks. It only had one magnet that I forgot to remove. So I took a cupboard door magnet and hose clamp to the axle. It works as good as factory set-up.
