IP Bolts

Post by wewantutopia »

I went to attempt to adjust the timing of my IP for the first time yesterday and couldn't get the pump loose enough to turn it!! The Bently say loosen the rear support bolt and the fromt mounting plate bolt. I found those and loosened them, the one that you get to with the timing belt cover off through the sproket and the other is under the 2 lowest check valves for the injector lines, but it didn't move. After reading on here I've found that there are 4....Where are the other 2 (and why doesn't the Bently mention them)? Thanks!!

There are three bolts on the that are on the front mounting plate. Look at this picture for the three bolts. With the pump spocket in the correct position, you can reach all three of them if you have too. The top two should have a square nut that is welded, but as you can see on mine, only one of the top nut is weleded, You will loosen this bolt from the other side of the plate. As to Benetly, I am not sure why he does not mention that.

Make sure there is room in the "slots" on the pump body that the bolts go through for the pump to be rotated. There is only a certain amount of movement allowed and there could be a chance that it is rotated all the way, if so then something is probably lined up wrong or installed wrong.
I have had to apply a little bit of force to rotate a pump before, something between the pump and the head. It made me nervous and I wouldn't recomend it but it may be necessary to get it loose.

Sometimes, especially if the timing has NEVER or ALMOST never been adjusted, the pump body sticks to the mounting bracket on the block.

Take a small rubber mallet and tap on the top/bottom of the injection pump (be careful not to tap anything other than the pump body, and even here, be careful) This will get it moving if it is actually stuck.
