1984 16d engine in a 1992 Passat?

Post by SteveR »

Does anyone know whether a 16d will fit in a 1992 passat wagon? Will the bell housing match the block? What about flywheel and clutch?
I have a line on a 1992 Passat GL wagon with a blown 2.0 gas engine.

I think it will but you'll have to verify the 16D block has the castings in the block for the power steering bracket, and get rid of the p/s motor mount attached to the injection pump bracket.

It should mate with the transmission fine. You may need to install a pilot bearing into the crankshaft though, not sure.

I would say its very heavy. The rubber band under the hood will have to be wound a couple extra wraps!! Should be a drop in. Fun with wiring thats all.

I have a Passat Wagon with a 92 ECO diesel in it and it pulls it very well (for a diesel), but the turbo probably helps a lot. It's a heavy car for a 1.6 NA but with synthetic oil and enough rpms it should get you around fairly well. I wouldn't want it here in the DC area since everyone drives like they are in NASCAR and get upset if you can't go 0-60 in less than 10 seconds. Needless to say, they have to wait on me.

Isn't the DC area great?!? I love it when I'm pulling away from the toll booth and they zoom around me to go 70... then after a little bit I catch up and pass them...

I think it's amusing that the government is lowering mileage standards because everyone that drives like an idiot was getting upset that their 6000 pound SUV wouldn't get 15/19 MPG like the sticker said. So now they re-rate it at 11/15 mpg so when they are doing stoplight racing they know what to expect (11 mpg!) or 15 mpg at 80 mph (if you're lucky).

Damn I must be getting old! Gonna have to get one of those old lady wigs too.

RazzInstead of a passat body, I found an 81 rabbit dx diesel body. I'm waiting on the response from the fellow who has it in a grove on a nearly abandoned farmstead near here. No rust, even on the strut towers!
I travel in rural Minnesota where a LOT of machines make less than fifteen MPH on the main thoroughfares. Who needs a jackrabbit when an old rabbit will do? javascript:emoticon(':D')
Very Happy

A Rabbit DX?
I've never heard of that.
I've heard of a rabbit pickup LX.
'91 Golf gasser converted to a 12mm pump, M-TDI.
'84 1.6TD Rabbit with a VNT-15 turbo, still setup to run on vegetable oil.
'84 GTI with 1.7TD pistons and intercooled.
2003 TDI wagon
2000 TDI Jetta.
