I got a tranny out of a gas parts car. The shift knob says 1-2-3-E and its from a rabbit 81-84. The 4th gear it a .71 and ratio is 3.89. I was wondering if this is a taller 4th gear and different ratio than the stock diesel tranny in my 84 rabbit. The motors coming out so it'd be any easy upgrade if its worth changing trannys.

It's probably a GP, that's a good 4 speed.
The GC is the one to stay away from.

You can find the code number stamped on a flat spot on the bottom of the transmission and compare the one you bought with the one you already have.

I pulled the motor today, and when the axles came out it gushed tranny fluid all over. Guess the seals are shot! Good thing I have that 3+E trans!

Just curious, but what does the "E" stand for?
