Startup after long storage (1.6 turbo)

Post by Polarbear Express »

I have aquired a 92 Jetta for a parts car (rust kills cars in Canada!). It was put away with no special preperation but was running well (54 MPG) with a fresh head . I am thinking about an engine swap but would like to see it run / do a compression test prior to changing it.
Any advice on startup after a storage of 1 1/2 years?
Many thanks in advance for your help.

Yes, remove the OUT bolt on top of the injection pump and fill the pump with fresh diesel fuel. Replace the bolt and loosen the 4 fuel unions at the injectors.

Remove the vacuum pump and rig up a wooden dowel with a slot so you can spin the oil pump with a drill. Have someone sit in the car with the ignition on and watch for the oil light to go out. Drill a bit longer if you have a turbo. Then reinstall the vacuum pump.

Crank without glow plugs until the fuel unions at the injectors become wet with fuel. Then tighten them, glow, and start the car!

Thanks for the speedy responce! Very neat trick with the oil pump,I have seen this done on smallblock Chevys but had not considered it on the 1.6. I will crack the oil line to the turbo also to allow "bleeding" of any air in the line. I was more concerned about rings siezing in piston s / marks on cylinder walls however I guess that after a few cycles everthing starts floating again!
I will let you know how I make out.
Many thanks again.
