still trying to figure out air leak

I have no idea if yurs is the same as a diesel tank, so you might be better off asking on a gasser site with a specific forum for you car, such as vwvortex or something. This is the best for diesels, but since some of your components are gas, you may have to shop around for answers.

success removing fuel sender
Well, I got it out. The fuel lines are gas but the sender is diesel (thank goodness!) It turns out that the ring was SCREWED on, none of this twist and lift stuff.
I have access to EKTA and the Gas/Diesel Bentley and none of them said that it screwed on. I'ts a genuine VW ring, so it's not aftermarket. Just weird.
Thanks,

misinformation
Earlier in this post I said there was a screen under the intank screen.
But when I cut a tank open that wasn't the case: viewtopic.php?t=6562
