Transaxle Identifacation How to's

How do I ID my transaxles & also how to tell if they are car or truck tranny and what is difference in gear ratios. :?:

Look on the bottom of the bell housing and the first 2 or 3 letters/numbers will tell you all you want to know:

No difference in car or truck transaxles.

Bentley says there is difference for 81 and later 4-spd.

What I meant with my comment was that there is no difference between the car and truck transaxles, as in you can put a "car" transaxle into a pickup and vice versa. Yes, there may be different units installed at the factory in a car and a pickup and that usually means gearing differences between the different units, just like between transaxles installed in gas and diesel vehicles. If you find a transaxle with the gearing selections you want, it'll work just fine in a car or pickup. Usually the gas transaxles have a taller final drive and it looks like between the GC and GP, the "car" box has a taller 5th gear.

I found this quite useful when finding a new(to me) trans when 2nd gear blew and locked up both front tires leaving work a week after i bought the golf :shock:
