OK, I bow to the greater minds.
Got the old starter off, removed old bushing, cleaned, lubed and replaced with new bushing. Felt proud of myself, nothing left to do but bolt new one on.
I cannot get the armature shaft in the bushing.
Spent a few hours on the hit or miss method and would like to know if someone out there has a hint or two so I can get my bunny back on the road. (Birthday present to myself)
As usual, all advice appreciated.

Wow... I can honestly say I've never seen or heard of this particular one... just when you think you've seen it all !!
I personally don't think there's any trick to this... and you've given it a serious collage try.
For the 69 cents a new bushing will cost you I'd be inclined to assume that there's something wrong with one you just put in and yard it out of there.. perhaps the wrong size or it got bent on the way in ??
Perhaps someone else has had this issue...

I'll go for improper bushing size or damaged during install. I did the rebuilt starter thing a while back...No problems..just slid right together.

My guess is the wrong size bushing, it looked like the diameter was smaller, but figured it was because I tapped the old one. Will grab another and see if that makes it easier.
Didn't think I was that inept, but it's been a long couple days.
