I wouldn't.

I'm a recovering air-cooled addict-friend don't let friends buy air-cooled vw's.

I certainly wouldn't convert the engine. The diesel rabbit/golf/jetta is a much better car in every way other than arguably style. How much labor for style?

On the diesel drop in point of veiw I would say yeah. On the fixing rusty panels side I would say no. Depends how nice you want it. Body looks not too bad if that is orignal paint. If ya got room for one more then I would say for sure. I want to see a diesel go in. A 1.6TD with 40psi of boost done all up. Thats what I see.

Beetles are very collectable in Canada. I've watched the prices soar up and I don't understand when there were so many on the road once. Might be a good investment, even if it wasn't restored. I would value that car at $2000 if the floor pan was good, maybe more. Phil

well, as far as beetles go, no one's going to fuss about you "modifying" a 71-72 super for a water cooled...could be fun, and probably work if you put as much attention to detail into it as you have into some of the other writeups I've seen from you.
a couple things to watch for - if you don't know, the supers are notorious for front end wear...you may have $400+ just to get it to stop wobbling - struts, bushings, etc...I've been there...
but if the body is solid, then the big question that always comes up with the air=>water conversions is where to put the radiator...
but all that aside, if it's solid, and you have space, time, $, and interest, go for it!

hagar may be off his rocker ----BUT regardless he IS a unabashed VW Beetle Lover. ---for some very good reasons First time I touched a VW car ? --1944 in the summertime..
Car ? Erwin Rommels Kubelwagen. --still in Afrika paint. place ? Jutland , Easter Lund near Horsens. ---He planted millions of LANDMINES. ----some are still there and dangerous in 2007.

As a machine of WAR the Kubelwagen had no equal from 1939 to 1945.---read my lips.
When Herr Hitler asked Dr.Porshe to design a good engine ? ---Porshe came up with a "Masterpiece".

I still have one that I got from Germany --BRAND NEW. --still have the shipping crate.----1600cc twin carb job. , in the crate was EVERYTHING needed.. Generator ,Coil,Clutch --heat exchangers----and much more.

for $250 ? you hesitate ? you are off your rocker. --IMHO.

How did you know it was a super? Its got the flat windsheild.
What distinguishes it as a super. I know its a super because I seen a pic of the trunk and it has strut towers. But you didn't see that pic.

Well anyway, I closed the deal for 200. I'll be picking it up saturday. My wifes gonna kill me.

Here's the rest of the pics. Those seats look like someone stole a golfers pants and sewed seat covers out of them.

Your gonna look like that guy in your picture under the blue bug. Cept you might not spend so much time with your engine in the trunk.

I was thinking about you today when I was at Calgary pick-an-pull. Walked by a bug with a complete engine in it. I think engines go for about 200 with all the add ons. I don't think it will last long.

short answer - waaaayyyy too much time spent playing with air cooleds...
:)
Long answer, in the first picture, the front view, you can tell that the nose is wider than a standard in the hood area...to allow for the struts, horizontal spare tire, all that jazz...the 71 & 72s had the earlier version of the wide nose, but still had the flat(ish) windshield, before the went with the full bubble treatment in 73...
also, if you look under the front bumper, the 71-2 supers have a small vertical grill, whereas the standards do not...that feature carried over into the later supers as well...
I've had a couple 71 Supers (3) all with the dreaded super beetle shuffle that comes with the worn out front end stuff....
Anyway, though, good luck - I'm definitely looking forward to reading about your progress with the engine swap...
:)

I had a new '72 Super beetle. I remember that the gas heater was standard, as well as vinyl seats, and the bumpers had rubber trim in the middle. Phil
