A couple tool pictures

Post by Fatmobile »

I finally dumped the pictures in my camera and got them hosted.
Here's a couple tools in action:
The bushing in the A1 alternators can make it tough to slide the alternator back on so I press it back a ways, using a bolt nut and washer to press it back into the socket.

...and this is what I use to pull stuborn injection pump sprockets:

Nice pictures Fats.

On the second picture do the bolts that go thru the big holes in the sprocket have a groove ground in them to hook onto the sprocket ?? A thin backing nut ??

I'm considering drilling and tapping all my sprockets on my latest engine for puller bolts... they *always* seem to be "stubborn" !!!

Vincent, are you sure there's enough "meat" on the sprockets to drill and tap some additional holes?

I put nuts on the back and threaded the bolts into them,... and they go through the small holes in the sprocket.
Grinding a lip/shelf near the end of the bolts is an idea I might try
It would be easier/faster than sliding a nut behind the sprocket.

Dunno... that's a good question. They look pretty beefy to me and are already pretty drilled out... I'd need to make sure balance is not impacted either. I just know that I'm pulling that pulley every 75K and I hate fighting with it !!

Vincent, when you install your pully, have you used some anti-sieze lubricant on the shaft and pully, or installed dry? Another idea you can try is using a candle and melting wax on a couple spots on the shaft, then install the pully. That may allow it to come off easier too.

I know there is a lot of holes in the pully's now, but drilling two more holes in it may weaken it to where it could break. I guess I didn't even think about the balance issue with drilling new holes, but that would probably come into play as well.

For the sprocket remover I use carriage bolts reversed compared to the picture and turn a nut on the side that's visible. The carriage bolt has a large flat surface on the back of the head which with a little bit of grinding can be made even a bit bigger on one side; insert them through the large holes in the sprocket; no need to get nuts threaded on behind the sprocket.

Doesn't everyone have one of these:

No, I know, the $79 is a bit steep, but I'm a tool junkie

Cool tool! I assume the notched ends rotate so that when you use it, one would be facing 180 degrees from the other? My home-made model with the 3/8" carriage bolts is similar, (not in appearance, of course,) but the two bolts are locked onto the bar with nuts on both sides to hold them solidly in place; about $2.00 and an hour of my time; (zero coolness: I'm not sure I would post a picture of it even if I had conquered that little picture-posting challenge.)

I just used a typical gear puller...No need to reinvent the wheel.

trying to banish a bit more inexperience: the picture upload challenge.

3/8" carriage bolts, center bolt is grade8, 1/2" thick steel bar.

Tawny try surrounding the URL with [IMG] and [/IMG] tags, like this:

whoo hoo! finally got it. (picture upload, I mean.) Sorry it's so big; next time. Took me 9 times to 're-invent the wheel' on that one; the sprocket puller was much easier. :)

Thanks,

Steve
