1.6 Head on A 1.5 engine will it work Pros?/ Cons?

Post by T-BONE »

Im building up a 1.5 diesel for a pickup. (Yes I already have pistons) 8)
I have a recently reworked 1.6 head. Rest of the motor didnt work out for very long (understatement!!! :x ) anyhow I want to be able to use this head on my new 1.5 engine my machine shop guy says the only difference may be the oil return hole and valve sizes but i should do more research before bolting it up. of course hed be happy to look into it for me but that will cost $$. "SO ALMIGHTY VDUB CHAMPIONS" Heres my more research, ask the ones who know. any input is always appreciated.
Thanks: T-Bone :D

I can't answer all of that but the 1.6 heads except for some early '81 heads used 12mm head bolts and the 1.5s were 11mm. There's also a difference in the oil return passages if I recall. Jack the forum owner could probably answer this right away. I believe he has an email link on the main page somewhere. He's very nice and very helpful regarding engine questions.

you'll have to do something about the oil return hole... there is an adapter for it, you'll find it on Jack's website, the valves should not matter

The adapter is used to put a 1.5 head on a 1.6L block, not the other way around.

The 1.5 is zippy around town, seems to have a strong midrange.
I think they have the potential to get better fuel mileage than the 1.6,... but htey lack power on hills and against the wind.
I think they would be a great engine to turbo.... with headstuds and a VNT15.

For the bolts, you could probably get some custom washers to use the 11mm bolts (the 12mm washer recesses are bigger). You might need longer bolts too, not sure. Studs might be the way to go anyway, the 11mm head bolts are known to be weak.

Couldn't that same oil drain adapter be used, upside down, to mate a 1.6 head to a 1.5 block? Slather it with RTV to keep it from leaking, of course.

The 1.6 to 1.5 adapter is used in the oil galley itself to make it smaller. Since the 1.5 oil galley (in the block) is already small, there's no way to force the adapter down in there. I think the best thing you could do is maybe get one and cut it small enough to fit in the 1.6L head but it would take some time to do that.
