Rebuilding a pump for my 92 Golf NA... it was actually a pump that I got on from a shop that rebuilds them. It was missing the cap and hardware that covers the timing piston on the back side. I have part to go on there from a spare pump, but I'm just wondering how to index it to the shaft that bears on the piston. It has very fine splines and I don't have any previous reference marks. Any ideas?
Also, I've taken the pump apart to reseal it, and I noticed when they rebuilt it previously they rotated the cross piece 90 degrees (the piece that links the driveshaft with the camplate). You can see the wear marks in 2 of the slots. I'm wondering if this was just a random thing or intentional to bring dimensions back into spec. Should this be routinely done to compensate for wear?
