VW Powersteering oil compatible with........

Post by Spokerider »

I'm doing a 1997 vw 1.9 TD aaz engine conversion to a 1991 GEO Tracker.

I'd like to keep the original vw powersteering pump and run it with the Tracker powersteering box. I understand that the vw ps pump needs to have the vw mineral oil [ for the seals ] and would like to know if this mineral oil is ok to use in a tracker powersteering box? Anyone know??

Thanks.

Ditch the Pentosin (mineral oil).

Last year I started using Mobil 1 Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid. Works great, it is actually better for the seals as they swell a bit so less leaks.

I originally got the idea when I had my Audi Quattro, I read about it on an Audi forum. The Audi racks use Pentosin as well and are notorious for leaking and using the ATF solved leaks, not to mention it's much cheaper and available just about everywhere.

I flushed the system when I swapped over, put the lines in a large soup can of ATF and ran the pump also turned the wheel lock to lock several times. A quart was all that was really needed to flush it out.

Right on, thanks for the Mobile 1 synthetic ATF tip.

I'm told the vw mineral oil was very spendy! Ouch.
