Fuel tank swap needed for conversions?

Post by HOPPING DIESEL »

I am doing a gas to diesel conversion with a 91 golf. I have a lot [/u][/u]of experience with biodiesel research and to my knowledge and experience, the only plastic that will not degrade over time is a florinated plastic. So I am not sure of the composition of the fuel tank, does anyone happen to know this off hand? If I could find the manufacturing stamp, I could likely determine its composition. Also, anyone running soybean oil through their systems would be subject to similar degradation of their fuel tanks if they are not florinated.

Has anyone have any experience or made any observations in regards to this?

I am concerned because biodiesel has made its way into all diesel fuel, whether it is declared on the pump or not.

I thought Mk1 and Mk2 VWs all had metal fuel tanks....

All Quantum's used plastic fuel tanks. Scraped a few and never had a leak :!:

I have a 86 Golf and 91 Jetta with black plastic fuel tanks. I haven't heard of anyone having problems with biofuel hurting the tank. Pump and fuel lines yes.

I've got several of these tanks lying around in storage.....what do I look for as far as a manufacturing stamp???
Is there a code or symbolic design or what, that you are looking for?????

I am not exactly sure... Generally with plastics there is a circle sort of stamp with writing and possibly a code in the center. Might about have to take a picture of it. Maybe everyone thinks I am nuts, but I have watched biodiesel and soybean oil eat through plastic containers in less than 3 months time. I am betting these plastic tanks are florinated, otherwise I think someone would be having leaks. I'd just like to check into it a little first.

Thanks for the input everyone!
