i checket the timing the best i could w/o the tools from vince's page. It loooked ok with my calibrated eye. At least it didn't look majorly off. I had the engine heater plugged in for an hour or 2 and it seemed like it wanted to start a little better.

I started on reading about how to check the glow plugs. I decided to pull #4 and it was bad, so i pulled #3 it was bad too. Could this be all of my troubles, just some bad glow plugs? it is about 48 degreese outside right now.

The glow plugs aren't the reason it quit going into the gate at work or why it runs funny.
It can make it start hard,... sometimes even when the engine is warm.

You set the crank at TDC and looked at the proper mark on the injection pump sprocket?
I wonder if it's possible to shear the injection pump key.
Do you have the dial indicator for checking injection pump timing?

took the golf to the doctor today. That was an ordeal. I got the tow dolly at 7:30. I had my uncle help me roll start it and left it idle for a while. He left and i tried to pull it up on the dolly. I killed it I spent the next hour trying various ways to pull it up the ramps until i woke my wife up and some guys stopped and helped me push it up. I got on way and was a few miles from Caleb's house so i stopped and checked the straps and the passengers side had slid back so i tightened it up. By the time i got to his hous the car had poped over the front of the tow dolly and the straps were keeping it from going all the way over the edge. It took about an hour before i jacked it up slid a 2x4 under it and pulled it off w/ his gti. I got on the road headed down past louisville to get the Jetta. It was a pretty uneventful trip. Got down there and loaded up the Jetta. I had to stop 5 times or so and readjust the crappy straps that came w/ the tow dolly.

Here are pics of the jetta. It is solid body wise, only a few small dents. the paint has oxidized very bad The guy had a WVO kit on it so there are hoses everywhere. I would like to get it running, but i may just steal alot of the parts off of it to fix the golf, but i am just a jetta fan i guess. It has a sed of decent BBSes on it. and the tires are decent. so that was almost worth buying it.

I usually run into ring grooves that are too sloppy to let me reuse the pistons.

Next time you have to get a car on a tow dolly, here's a real easy way to do it.

Pull the truck/dolly setup so that it is absolutely straight to one another. Push the car as far onto the dolly that you can and set the parking break on the car. Then, start the truck and back it straight up until the dolly is pushed under the car far enough for the wheels to fall into the pocket that they ride in. Don't forget to remove the parking brake before driving away. Getting the car off is the same as getting it on, except in reverse. I typically set the parking brake, then quickly accelerate (for a 1/2 second) to "yank" the dolley out from under the wheels, then slowly drive forward to get the car completely off the dolly. If you just try to pull forward, you will end up dragging the car, since the wheels sitting in the pocket takes some good thrust to get it out of that pocket. I haul cars like this all the time.
