Vibrations at Idle all from the TRANNY!!!??

Post by chalupien »

Well after my first time doing any major engine work. The Diesel Rabbit is running amazing. This thing handles well, and at the same time the ride is smooth.

Anyway I bought all the engine mounts bc alot of stuff rattles and its really loud when Im just sitting still and the engine is idling....

But tonight I came back from the store and the engine was idling and before I turned it off i pressed the clutch in and all the vibrations and rattles STOPPED!!....

So Im thinking its all because of my tranny/clutch...

Anyone know about this. Lately I have been wanting to get a 5speed (4 in now) So this might just be the excuse to spend another chunk of change and a weekend.

That might be the clutch release bearing.

Ok, well I dunno what it is. But its probably the mount (specifically the one that holds up the passenger side of the engine)

There are very loud vibrations during idle and the greatly decrease during higher rpms.

And after the engine is warm, they are also less, but no by much..

The vibrations also change when there are different loads on the alternator.

So..

Normal sound for a worn out trans. The gears whip at low rpm due to play in the input shaft and gears.

solution, new trans or hold the clutch in.

Most big rig truck do this, as did my first trans. No harm will be done, just annoying noise. Try a different trans.
Also higher rpm will quiet them.
