No Timing mark on the Flywheel or Clutch Plate Aargh

Post by 82Caddy »

I went to change my timing belt today and cannot find the timing mark on the clutch plate/ flywheel. The marks on the pump and cam pulley's are there and lined up but I have nothing to go by on the crank. I would have been nice to mark it before removing the belt but it's too late now. Any ideas?

You can use a feeler in the injector hole (taking care to remove the injector in the proper way to avoid cracking the head) or pull the oil pan and see the crank and rods that way.

I have a 1.6 with a pre chamber. No Go. I wish I had a TDI at this point!

You have to back out the glow plug...

I was able to get past the tip of the glowplug but whatever my dial indicator landed on it wasn't moving. I see what you mean now. The glowplug was blocking my path to the opening. Duh. Not realizing this I took the oil pan off and boy I'm glad I did. My guess was way off. The first rain of the season topped off a fun filled day. Thank you very much for the advise.

You will need a very thin tipped dial indicator to get through the opening in the pre-chamber. The blade of the screwdriver is wide, but thin and will fit through, but much thicker and it won't.

I think Hagar suggests a dipstick for this.
Thin enough to fit down the hole but still stiff enough,.. and it's something that most of us have readily available.

Back on the road. I must have done it right because it's running a little cooler and I can actually go 60MPH! :P
