Pump only runs at WOT?

Post by thegimpster »

I bought a jetta a while back and my friend finally got it running, but when you start it it is only at wide open throttle. He said that some spring in it or something crapped out on me. Is there something i can do other than rebuild it or replace it to fix it?

Pull the top off the pump and free up the flyweights.
Might as well get a seal set and change a few seals while you are at it.

FWIW, replace the exterior seals in the new IP before you put it on the car. If the seals weren't replaced, with the new ULSD diesel, it's going to leak eventually.

Take Fatmobile's advice; it's a lot easier than replacing the pump, and unless the ebay pump has been properly worked on, you don't really know that what you're installing is better. Free-up the flyweights first; if that doesn't work, then install the ebay pump.

i think i am going to send the ebay pump out to be resealed. i found a place that will do it fairly cheaply and it might be easier to do it now rather than later. i will try to free the flyweights up before i take it off to put the other one on. How hard is it to get the top of the pump off to check it?

Take a picture of the springs on the throttle before you dive in. Then get some mechanics wire. Make some looses so you can hold part of the throttle in position while you take the springs off. Other wise it will go off like mouse trap. Thats what mine did. Lucky I had another pump to reproduce the set up. The top just lifts off with one little shaft that has to be detached. This was a Fatmobile trick I learned after set the trap off.

Here's a link to pictures on how to assemble an IP. You can review the whole process and find what you're looking for. This is an excellent thread for information.

Very nice ride.
Watch for oil out the dipstick tube. Easy cure if you find it,... might as well drill the restrictors out now :)
Internal block pressure can push your seals out.
