Here is a pic of the gasket. The little piece i had to get out of the pump w/ tweezers.

Any good tips for taking off the top half of the IP?

Yes DON'T.

Why ? -- it may not be necessary. , like changing O ring seal on distributor block , NO need to remove block.

Post type of I P and V W model car. . If you do I shall try to explain.

Mine looked like that after I had installed the control (governor) collar backwards on the distributor piston. The pump built up too much pressure (even with the solenoid stop pin removed). It blew the seal right out. At least, that's what I think happened. I'm no diesel expert.
