I shut the car off but it keeps running
I know we've talked about this before, it's not the first time it's happened,..
but I can't find the topic.
The folks that bought my GTI diesel said it wouldn't start. It was the stop solenoid.
I replaced it with a used one and it starts right up,..
then won't shut off.
If I start it but don't bump the accelerator, and the alternator light is still on; it will shut off.
,...but if I rev it until the alternator light goes out, it will not stop running when I turn the key off.
Pull the connector off the stop solenoid and it will shut off. I didn't have my voltmeter with me so I don't know if it has power after that.
I remember Sharkey talking about feedback from the alternator, through the blue wire and putting a diode in the blue wire solved the problem that time
but I think I remember someone having an easier solution.
Anyone remember another cure?

Doh, I forgot to put the spring inside the stop solenoid.
Runs,.. and stops running great now.
The weather is getting nice again.

Looks like we hit post at the same time!!
Glad it was something simple. I only asked about the wire because my car has a second identical type connector sharing the same piece of wiring harness right at the pump, from the AAZ that should be in there I'm guessing.

There is an oil temp or pressure wire, for a sensor on the filter mount, that looks like it will fit.
I knew I remembered a simple solution for this but couldn't find it in search,..
I must not have written it down last time I did it .
Everything is melting around here. Raining tomorrow. I've been imagining spring almost all winter but more frequently through this last month.
Spring might not be here yet, probably more cold on the way,..
but it's good to see the ice/snow melting because
we won't get a real warm day while that's on the ground.

Whew.... thank heavens, a simple explanation. I was wracking my brain trying to puzzle how the alternator and the glow plug relay (which drives the stop solenoid) could be related...Fatmobile wrote:Doh, I forgot to put the spring inside the stop solenoid.

Temp went up to -10C in the shade, close to 0 in the sun, maybe the spring will come this year too afterall!
