Oil can light comes on blinks & BEEPS

While cranking my engine the red Oil light goes out, comes back on blinks and beeps. Dip stick shows normal oil level. Does not start!

With my 98 TDi and my 2003 Golf TDi this appears to signal oil pressure low due to non running engine. My 98 did this a lot when I stalled at a steep uphill stop sign at the end of my street, Both TDi's do this when I have a mysterious failure to start situation which could be due to a fuel supply problem, a bad fuel shut off (solenoid/valve), the immobilizer or a computer problem or some combination of the above ;-(
