89 jetta n/a with p/s and a/c: Alternator tensioner pulley Q

Post by thegimpster »

My alternator was making some noise and the belt was kind of loose so i started to replace the belt today and noticed that the race on the adjustor pulley bearing was off and there was a few bearings missing. My question is does anyone have one laying around or does anyone know the number or where to get the bearing to replace it at?

I've got a couple of the bearings at home, but I'm in Vegas until Wednesday. They're pretty easy to replace - I just used a couple of sockets and my bench vise to press the old one out and pop the new one in.

Here are the numbers

1) INA brand #6202 RS
2) SKF brand #6202 2RSJEM
3) Nachi Quest brand #6202-2NSE9

I found it over at the vortex. I went digging through the basement and i had 2 in a box of crap left over from a project. It took some force to get the bearing out of the pulley. i put it in the arbor press w/ a socket that was the right size for it, lubed it up w/ wd-40 and it took an arm and a leg's worth of force to break it free. I about fell on my butt when it gave way and i flew foreward. it was funny. i got the new one back in too. i'll put it on tonight.

A little heat on the housing might save you from getting an extra crack. When installing it just put the bearing in the freezer for an hour. Be careful with the heat on the housing. Anything over boiling point of water can damage the bearing. SKF says all warrants are off.
