no engine code on the engine, can I find out what code it is

Post by Chris76 »

Hi... I was wondering if you can help...

I have been trying to fix up my VW multivan but im having some problems figuring out what engine it has.

Now.. the thing is that it does have not an original engine...

Some previous owner put in a VW Passat engine in it... it worked a wonder until the engine went bust.

We know that it is a 1.8 TDI and that it came from one of the early Passats, I spoke to the guy who did this job but he
could not remember what car it came from, he did say that it could have been a 1.8 TDI Passat SL, but then he wasnt sure
and I cant seem to find this type of car...

This engine now doesnt have the engine code... this is whats causing me so much trouble.

Ive been looking up and dont seem to have much luck.. From looking I guess that the engine code could be an AAZ or an AHU,
but I could not be sure

It has a few serial numbers... these are (23B96) and (028103021AM)

Could you know what engine it is from these numbers.

Please help if you can, I would really appreciate this or if you know someone who can help please let me know.

Kind Regards,

Chris

A few ammendments to the engine specs

Post by Chris76 »

the 028103 021AM is on the engine Block

I have spoken to the mechanic who previously started working on it and he
said that the engine has an electronic pick-up sensor and that it is a 1.9TDI
It also has an electronic Pump.

The AAZ pump was used on turbo diesel engines with "indirect" injection... fuel is injected into a pre-combustion chamber rather than directly into the cylinder. These are known as "TD" engines.

The AHU pump is used on turbo diesel engines with "direct" injection... fuel is injected directly into the cylinders. These are known as "TDI" engines... the D meaning direct.

Bottom line: having a turbo doesn't make it a TDI engine. The type of fuel injection used determines the naming schema.

The challenge is that there were a couple different flavours of the AAZ pump that can make it confusing, particularly when we can't crack open the hood and have a peek ourselves. In particular, there's a version that has significant electronic controls.... it shipped just before VW switched over to the TDI design.

Probably the easist way to know which you have is to look at the top of the pump. If the pump has a throttle cable it's an indirect or TD engine, most likely with an AAZ engine/pump. If there's no throttle cable its the TDI engine, most likely the AHU engine/pump.

In case it's not confusing enough, some folks take the electronic TDI pump and convert it to manual control. These are referred to as "m-TDI" pumps and are almost always home-brewed.

If all else fails, you might want to post a couple pictures of the engine and the pump. This is one of those times when a picture is worth a thousand words. There's a sticky post at the top of this forums that explains how to do this.

engine codes

Post by Chris76 »

Buy what I remember the throttle was electronic / no cable.

Is there a difference between the 1Z/AHU and the AHU engine.

I will try and take some photos of the engine and post them as soon as I can.

thanks,

Chris

Here you can see various codes, these are:

1: 23B96

2: 156 (there you can also see the VW logo)

3: 028103021AM

4: Electronic pick-up sensor

6: AMC

Between the 2 and the 4 there you can see the VW and the AUDI logo[/img][/img]

It looks to me like a 1Z or AHU (they are interchangeable).

follow up on finding out an engine code

Post by Chris76 »

The problem with it is that the engine block is cracked..
The engine "got fixed'' and then we realized a small crack.
What I want to do is just change the engine block, as the rest of the things got fixed, crank shaft got rebored, piston head replaced, new bearings... etc.

That is why I'm looking for what engine code it is... The 1Z has 90 HP and the AHU has 110 as I have read..

If the engine were to be a 1Z could I replace the engine block with 1 of an AHU? or vise versa?

What do you mean by interchangeable...?

I could most probably buy a complete engine either a 1Z or an AHU.. second hand, but would it be trust worthy...

Thanks,

Chris

Yes, as far as I know you could replace the block itself with that of the AAZ, 1Y, 1Z, AHU (I'm sure there's more).
