AWY to AGS trany swap - need help

Post by hippiehulahooper »

I just got an ags to replace my awy.
pulled from a yard. supposedly 90,000.

does speedo hole inside need to be cleaned/blown out?
what seals should I replace while this is out.
and what else is recommended?

flange seals are dry.
there is fluid around selector shaft seal.

I have never done this before. and would like to do as much outside the car that I can before swap.

Awy was leaking and I did not like the gearing for highway.

I'll also need to change the reverse switch in the car.

The push rod tube seal and bushing should be changed while the trany is out. It will dump trany fluid right on the clutch when it does leak.
Trany flange seals are easier to change while it's out but can be done on the car. They are the most concerning,.. they can have a grove worn in them and need a speedi-sleeve. That can get spendy
Selector shaft is probably hard to get to in the car.

Doing the clutch while you are in there?
Rear main seal?
If so you will need new pressure plate to crank bolts.

I have an AGS in my Golf and really like it.

Have you got 100 or 90 mm drive flanges? The 90's can be sleeved for under $50, so if you know you're putting together a vehicle you want to be leak-free for a long time to come, it's a good time to go for it. Newly sleeved flanges with fresh seals is good peace of mind.
