My old (now somewhat retired) Jetta diesel I picked up for $50 and the last diesel Rabbit I got for $175. Neither of them looked great, but they both ran and drove. I actually just replaced that winter Jetta with a "new" 1986 model gas Jetta after driving the old $50 one for 4 winters. Yep, I think I got my money's worth out of it 8)

Both of those I got phone calls on them as the people calling me knew I was into old VW diesels. They're out there for cheap, but I think fatmobile has cornered the market on cheap turbo diesels :(

Perhaps Fatmobile would share some info?
I sure would love to get one and try some "Hillbilly Tuning" and retire my NA before it retires itself.

I'm with you on that one! I'm still keeping my eye out for that $150 TD (or less) that I'm looking for. I'm not willing to pay more, because I need another car around here like I need another hole in my head

I think the prime time to fish for turbo diesels is in the fall and early winter. A lot of owners aren't clued into diesels and have trouble starting them. If you have a wide net and grape vine you should be able to catch a few. It's actually raining VW parts on my door step with different people dropping parts off because they are getting out of the old 1.6. I'm an old fishermen from way back.

I'm thinking the TD's are much more prevalent in CA.
I sure would like to find one on the cheap as well.
The caddy needs just a bit more horsepower for pulling the boat down the freeway.

I have no way of knowing but I think your right. When pump prices go up the westend dealer in Edmonton Alberta sells 80% TDI's. Someone told me about a 97 TDI Jetta with 208,000km on it for 4500 just today. I don't know if I'm read for that kind of technology yet. At the wreckers you often see 10 to 15% of the VW are diesels with a fair amount of turbo's among them. I think one of are members made a run up here and hulled back a load of engines a while back.

About the broken TDI's:
It seems like theres a lot of botched TB-jobs over there, based on the number of threads on that topic over at tdiclub.com.
If you do the tb right and change the oil at the right intervals the TDI will last forever and a day 8)

Have to agree with hagar that old Rabbit/Jetta diesel prices seem to be down... probably 'cause it's winter, but also because none of the VW diesels was eligible for the big US federal clunker-carnage program last year, so they're 'still around'. At any given time, there's always a certain % of the population ready to sell. That's due to marketing... part of what keeps so many folks broke!

Not the time for me to buy any more cars, hagar. I'd have to find another place to live, pay higher monthly payments (too much already), and then there's the divorce lawyer... ! So I'm actually gonna repair and sell off some of my current 'fleet', though probably not any of my VWs.

Happy days & good weather y'all.
