Transmission shifting- reverse too close to 1st

Post by tonbra »

So I ended up pulling the 5 speed Diesel trans out of my 91 Jetta and put it into my 88 Cabriolet Diesel (to replace a leaky 4 speed). I had it shifting OK for about 20 miles then ended up having to take it to a shop to have some work on the trans done. They removed the trans and resealed it. When I got it back, I notice now if I am not VERY careful going into first, I can eaisly go into reverse and not know it. Is there a way to no make this so easy to do? Is it just a linkage deal or is there an adjustment I can make to better isolate first gear from reverse?

What he said........you should HAVE to push the shifter down and over to hit reverse. Once you look at how it works it's pretty simple.
