how in the world do i put on the IM pulley on a 1.6D?

Post by rustywesty »

Trying to piece together my motor, which came partially dismantled. I can not figure out how to attach the intermediate pulley. My pulley does NOT have any slots for a woodruff key, though the shaft seems to have two slots that could take a key.

There was a bolt and thick washer that was the only possible match in my box of removed loose parts, but when I try to attach it, the shaft itself starts spinning. Am I missing something or a part here? is there some other method besides a key that would lock the pulley to the shaft to tighten the bolt?

Should I post here or in the westy forum? its an 82 westy

think my pully has been reamed

I am thinking that my pulley has been routed out to the width of the key.

I think if you install the vacuum pump that interfaces with the intermediate shaft and oil pump, this will cause enough friction and you'll be able to install the bolt. If you still can't get it tightened all the way, then install the timing belt and tension that, then final tighten the intermediate pully bolt.
Everybody else lists their cars here - but not me.

This engine part is the same no matter what body style.

Really, no keyway on the intermediate shaft pully?

You don't mean the cam sprocket do you?
Weird.
So you think the key tore the bore out of the I-shaft pully?
I've seen the bolt get loose, and the loose pully tore up the shaft and ruined the bore of the pully.

Sounds like you need a new pully.
How does the shaft look?

Thanks for the above tips. i may need them when installing a new pulley.
here is a photo of what mine looked like:

main clue was that the hole is not centered...

Luckily, the shaft seems to be OK though......
