Why won't the damn injection pump come off?

Post by Fatmobile »

I am putting a timing belt on a Rabbit we scored at an auction last fall.
It's getting a new motor mount bushing while I'm in there so I had to pull the pump.
The bolt down under the back was gone and all the others came out,... but the pump would not pull out...

Can you believe it? The last person who worked on it put the bottom injection pump bolt in right but bolted the other end of the bracket to the rear injection pump bracket. I found the other missing bolt down by the waterpump.

It is turning out to be a great little engine though. I did my hillybilly compression test by putting a wrench on the crank bolt and seeing how hard the crank turns. It sprang back when near the top of the compression strokes,... that says to me it's up around 400psi or higher.
Lots of factory green paint once some of the gunk was removed:

I pulled the intermediate shaft to check the bearings and they look great. So I took a bad picture of part of the front one:

The inner one felt real smooth too.

While the vacuum pump was out I took a look at how it was mating with the oil pump:
Image
As you can see, the oil pump shaft looks great, new looking, no wear that I saw. the brass bushing on the bottom of the vacuum pump and the slot the oil pump shaft fits into both look great. Turning it by hand the vacuum pump creates a suction and blowing through it showed the check valves to be working well.
New waterpump going in but the housing looked like hell so I'm going to glass bead it.
I dug down about as far as I need to today. A little more block cleaning since the waterpump is now off, then it starts going back together.

I did a little driving today 8) ,... in the tired old Fatmobile  to get parts and glassbead parts so I can wrench some more when I get home :D .
Bill bought this car at an auction I told him about, and went to with him.
After getting it home he said.
I buy it, you work on it. We sell it on ebay and split the dough.
So it's good to see the engine is in such great shape.
I didn't have to replace the I-shaft bearings so that saved me some work.
I didn't buy it because I have too many project cars already and no place to store another one.... well there is some room left in my yard but you would all laugh if you saw how many cars are sitting here now... in different states of decomposition and recomposition (hey I think I made a new word). 8)

If some of the cars in your yard have wheels on them, they're officially called movable storage units. At least that's what my friends call mine 8)
Everybody else lists their cars here - but not me.

I have too many to count

Been awhile since I updated this project.
,... Got it running great, I put some water in it the year before and tested it for leaks.
Then sent it home to Bill's and when Bill sat in the driver's seat, it went through the floor.
Then because of the seat, didn't get it sold,.. so Bill drained it before winter.
Sooo I welded up the pinch welds, both sides, seats are in solid.
Got that done last summer.
... but the area near my right foot felt loose, yep, where the control arm bolts to is weak.
Looks like some more welding is in order.
Put water in it again to run it for awhile, test drive and flush it.
Forgot to put antifreeze in it before he came to store it in his yard while I worked on other projects,.. but sent 2 gallons with him.

He didn't put the antifreeze in it,.. didn't even drain the water before last winter...

I'm sure it couldn't handle -15F with no antifreeze.
I'm afraid to look what happened.
Plan to just wash my hands of it, and not partner-up on projects again.

OK, went over there the other day with a big battery.
We filled it with water,..
it leaked out the back, around the frost plug.
I might not have tightened it enough so I pulled it, cleaned the area the o-ring seals against and reinstalled it.
Filled it with water, no leak.
Installed aforementioned fat battery,
applied the proper glow time,
I don't usually wait for the light to go out, 10 seconds usually does it.
It started but ran a little rough.
We checked for air in the line, there was some,
started it again, fuel flowed quickly into the pump but it still ran a little rough.
Twas when I had the good sense to pull the cold start knob,..
and it smoothed right out. sounded great.

Sooo what actually happened is last winter started with a sudden severe cold snap, nice one week, 0 the next.
He was plowing and when he got back he pulled the lower rad hose to drain it.
It was slushy.
He put the block heater on it and started it before using my
"famous" easy drain to drain the block.
So the car sat for about a year and started right up.
looks like he caught it in time.
The radiator doesn't even leak.
Sooo,.. it's time to sell it.
