It started at -15....NO block heater

Post by dkmc »

I can't believe my 1.6NA actually started today and it was minus 15deg.
It was not even plugged in........180,000+ miles since rebuild.

I think the big battery and larger cables help alot.
After about 8 miles it started sagging a bit....fuel gelling for sure.
When I got to work I put about 1 gallon of KERO in the tank.....runs fine now.

Stay warm!

Nice!

Thanks for the good reminder too... I need to put some anti-gel in my fleet.
Have a nice day.

That's pretty good. Years ago ole 82 started when it was that cold out, and ended up dying probably because of gelled fuel. It did restart, which was very nice, given the situation I was in. In Michigan, you may be getting winterized diesel, so adding anti-gel may not be 100% necessary, but certainly a wise idea.
Everybody else lists their cars here - but not me.

About 10 years ago this engine was in my (now retired) 85 Golf.
It's now been in the 92 Jetta about 2 years.
Back then, I built a simple honing machine using junk around the shop, and a dewalt 1/2" drill.
This fixture bolted to the block deck and I used it to hone all 4 cylinders .020 oversize
with the block in the car. The drill drove a sunnen ridgid precision honing head (not the spring loaded 3 finger kind).
Also did the valves and guides, rod bearings and seals.
All the rest is original.....and I think it's got to be around 700,000 miles at this point.

That's a rebuild to be proud of.
I put a used engine in a Rabbit last summer.
Wasn't sure how good it was but I got it to start at around 5F, without much strain on the starter,... after sitting a month.

Summer fuel; I could see the wax crystals moving through the fuel line coming out of the filter, so I shut it right off.
Getting some warm weather the next couple days so I'll put some antigell in.
I'll get a chance to try it at -15F this weekend.

That was 15F you were talking about right?
