cracked head junk or can it be rebuilt?

Post by im_n2_vws »

We took the head off my Dads 1.6 n/a diesel to replace the headgasket. While we had it off we noticed a crack between the valces on one cylinder. We put another really nice head back on. What I was wondering is the head junk or can it be welded? I don't need it but was wondering weather to scrap it or keep it and get it rebuilt? Thanks,

The head can be reused if there's a reasonable size crack between the valves. If it's too big, the head can be welded, seats ground and reused. Don't throw the head out.

Jack I believe told me once as long as its not a big enough crack that your thumb nail can fit in it its reuseable.

I've reused every head I pulled off, cracks or not, and never checked them. Always had great success.

IIRC VW says cracks between valves are perfectly acceptable as long as they are not wider than 0.5mm... half the thickness of an American dime and about the thickness of a thumbnail, as it turns out!

Usually, if it's cracked too bad, the head will be warped.
