Help identifying 1.9L long block engine

I bought a 1983 Diesel Vanagon a couple years ago I'm trying to figure out what kind of engine is in it. The previous owner told me that it had been replaced with a rebuilt 1.9L long block engine, but that's all I know. The code is "028 103021 AF". Also, there is a VW and and Audi stamp (the linked circles) on the engine block. I've checked all of the engine code lists I can find on the Internet. All I can say is that it looks a lot like the engine with the code AAZ. Here's a picture:



Any ideas?

I don't think you are giving the block code. The block code is on the machined surface under the large coolant hose between that hose and the vacuum pump. Last digits letters are the engine code.

p.s. fix that leaky injector and your engine would be waaayyy quieter if the snorkel was hooked up to the intake.

I see. Here are the two numbers I've found:



I've labelled what I think is the large coolant hose with a big blue 'A'. I don't know where the vacuum pump is. Would you describe that to me?

The leaky injector has been fixed and I'll add the snorkel fix to my todo list. I'd sure love it if the engine was a bit quieter.

It's either an earlier 1.9 l because it doesn't have the large crankcase breather, and possibly from a past industrial setup. Or a 1.6 with a 1.9 head,but unlikely unless the guy you got it from knew what he was doing.
Look under the truck . At the bottom of the block , on the side almost facing
the ground, there should be a large [1 1/2 " ? ] 1.9 or whatever lettering boss. That will tell you .

As for quieter-well that will take much much checking sites like the Samba for what can be done. Good luck with that one. Fixing that intake will help. But at each stage it'll only go down by minute degrees [or in this case -decibels]

The location where you say it says 28F01 is where the engine code should be. Any chance you are misreading that? A "Y" after the 1 would make it a 1Y engine code which is the 1.9 non-turbo engine.

The vacuum pump is the part with the hose coming out of it directly under the little white arrow on the large hose labeled "A". It supplies vacuum to the power brake booster.

Yup, on appearances alone at this angle it looks 1Y-ish to me.

Well, I attacked the engine code stamp with degreaser and got it as clean as I possibly can. It definitely says 28F01, but it's possible that the '1' is really a 'Y'. It looks like a bad stamp with the top of the '01' falling well below the F. The bottom of the engine says 1.9 with a 'D' below it, by the way.

After looking through some of the previous owners paperwork I called the shop that installed this engine. After 5 years the guy I talked to was able to remember the care immediately.

He said that the engine was ordered from overseas and that I wouldn't be able to easily figure out what kind of make and model car it was originally from but he said maybe an early 90s Jetta would be similar. The good news is that he said it should all work very similar to the 1.6 L diesel vanagon engine.

post, I have the same engine as that one you have and codes etc... 1.9l mine is a turbo and it doesnt
have the normal code ''jx'' ''cs' or whatever the engine maybe, so was just wondering did ya find out what the exact
engine is?? Im guessing aaz

Sadly, no. I've never been able to find any more information. Mine isn't a turbo.

so today I stripped back the water cooling pipes just two or so and
right on the little smooth plate where it said it would be i found the engine
code (I had looked here twice before and didnt find it) it was really faint
'1x' was the code, 1.9 litre diesel, but this is non turbo and mine has a turbo
so still a bit more fiddling to find out exactly what is what,I think last owner
stuck the turbo on himself.

Sounds like the engine in my '82 pickup. A 1Y, non-turbo 1.9L. It was shipped from South Africa as I understand and from Vege-Motoren according to the paperwork I have. Some links below:

I think they were used in the early '90s Passats in Canada for one.

According to the 'KATE' 1X was a 1.9 n/a used in the transporter and 'california'??? between Sept 1990, and /Novmber/August 1995 respectively

Looks very similar to the 1Y I have in my MK3 Golf (UK) but i don't think mine has the two pipes at the top of the picture, look like coolant pipes?? several breather pipes also missing off the top of the cam cover compared to mine.

Is the radiator just out of view in this picture or is it mounted elsewhere??
