i've got problems '86 D na me (hyd) need some advice

Post by air-cooled or diesel »

i have an mk2 '86 diesel, na. eng code me (hyd lifters)
im having problems removing new pistons/ rings from the cylinders by the top, no ring ridge.
the old ones were hard, any suggestions?

the major problem is this:
i have valves hitting pistons, now i've heard it before, timing, that is why im posting cos its not a timing issue. you regress, i see, let me explain. crank is tdc, cam is tdc, and injection is on (#1 firing). pistons are new, mahle. head is new, all parts are new. cyl head gasket is 3 hole and the right one. timing belt is new, tension is normal. here's the 1 problem, the reason i found this is my dad did the bottom end and rods 2/3/4 were backwards, so as above they must come out. let me explain this, cyl 1 hit the most, valve is gone. cyl 3 hit and valve i didnt check (im just going to get all new as it is). cyls 2 and 4 brushed. all were intake hits/brushes. why would this happen if as i said my crank and cam timing are on, and cyl 1 rod was not backwards, and cyl 3 hit substantially? i'm stumped, any feedback, and yes i know how to time a diesel. crank was at correct tdc mark, cam was tdc. has any one heard of this? rebuilt motor has less than 50 miles on it, and was never reved up much, valve springs are new and ok. :?: :?:

I believe there are several different thickness headgaskets. You're supposed to measure how high the pistons come up, and pick a headgasket based on that.

Was the deck shaved? What was the protrusion?
Have a nice day.

If your head is a copy or refurbished[skimmed], it is possible that the valve heads are not recessed into the head enough, and valves can get very close to the piston either side of TDC, yet have clearance at TDC.
This is what is happening to my head that I over skimmed...
However in my case it is a mere kiss and has been doing it for over 40000 miles.

If only inlets are being hit then it is happening after TDC and is the pistons being chased [and caught] by the inlet valves down the bore.

Do the inlet valves sit higher than the exhaust ones?

Perhaps smaller valve shim gap is making the difference...

head is a rather expensive aftermarket, new no work to it/ stock.
valves seem to sit ok, i'll have to check that.

So you didn't measure the piston protrusion? Got a gasser cam in it maybe?

well let me put it like this, ITS not a gas cam.
 well i'll have to measure 1 and 3 piston heights and see what i get, gosh -busted.
but on the other hand i'm using a 3 notch head gasket, so the pistons would have to be wrong, and they re mahle sooo
if 1 and 3 are good, i dont know what... yet, going to try again to pull them in a bit.

According to www.beckarnley.com, that valve part number fits:

"Audi 4000 1982-83; VW Golf, Jetta, Rabbit, Vanagon 1985-86"

I'd say that since it fits 82-83 and 85, it's a mechanical lifter valve. I think the crossover was sometime in 1986 to hydraulic heads.

Buy them from Jack, the owner of this forum. Valves are at the bottom.

Intake valves are 8 thou longer than exhaust, and so has to be accounted for somewhere, ie valve seat, shim, or cam lobe
