1.9l aaz fuel smileage?
What kind of fuel mileage are you guys getting with 1.9l aaz cars? I acquired a 97 jetta 1.9l idi aaz a while ago and I really struggle to get over 45mpg. While my old 89 1.6ltd jetta is still getting well into the 50mpg range and it has 550,000km on the clock!
The 97 runs prime, not sure what the timing is set at but it was set by a vw stealership when timing belt was replaced by P.O, so im assuming the timing is good, no smoke, starts excellent etc... Air filter and intake is clean, hi-flow K&N which made no difference, turbo spools up nicely, new exhaust so that rules out a plugged catalytic converter.
Its not that im not happy with 45mpg, im just curious as to why its not as good as the non aaz 1.6l jetta.

My feeling is the Mark3's are heavier. More wind resistance and little bit of a bigger engine. I find it sad that these cars have gotten bigger and over weight just like the population in general. Do you think it relayed. Maybe that's why they won't bring the Lupo to North America.

Just breaking in a new AAZ engine (it's got about 10K miles on it) and I'm getting about 30 miles to the US gallon in the city and 38 miles to the US gallon on the highway. Gotta way to go obviously before she's found her groove.
650 km / 50l tank in the city, 800ish on the highway.

there are sooo many factors to influence smileage on these rigs, wheel bearings, brakes, tire pressures, missing plastic pieces on the body and engine bay, etc etc, you have to have everything perfect to really make it roll nice and smoothly. i imagine the golf is a bit lighter than a jetta as well...
I had a Passat with the same engine and I never got it under 6L/100km, don´t know how much that is in mpg but about 40? That´s not bad considering the size of the car, but I´ve had both a Peugeot and a Mercedes of the same size and both of them had better mileage.
I think the Passat had a 70litre tank, I remember that I always drove it until the odo turned from 999.9 to 000km, great fun can be had with large tanks

Oh alright then, at least its normal and there are others out there getting the same mileage. 810km is quite well for it, if its loaded or around town I couldn't dream of 810km. Just used to my old 1.6l getting phenomenal mileage, 55mpg or something like that But of course the aaz 1.9l has a lot more power.

kevin g, You could always swap engines. I've seen a 1.6L NA in a MK3 and buddy was stating he was getting close to 1000Km per tank and he also lives in the bush so no street light to stop him.
One concern is air drag so wax the front till your eyes fall off. I also hear there use to be a bottom cover for the engine bay to help with the air flow so it doesn't push up in there lifting the front of the car.
Another note that I haven't done or checked into myself is the IP pressure that lacked in the 1.6's from the ULS.
So far I've made my car ECO, added a pony pump, K/N filter, went synthetic, added rust holes in the floor for foot power, new injectors, turned my smoke screw down and still get the same mileage. But then again I've added 150 LBS in junk to the back trunk. My car is my shop so I have to carry everything with me. At least I can re-time the engine, oil change, take injectors out, brakes, axles, etc and replace the alternator on the side of the road if I wanted to. The only thing I'm lacking is a cheery picker
