Injector location between the IDI and TDI heads

This forum is for TDI (Turbo Direct Injection) questions/posts. Non-TDI Motors (Including the 1.6, and 1.9 or other variant turbo diesel motors) should go in the VW Diesel General Forum

Injector location between the IDI and TDI heads

Post by dalek »

When VW made the TDI head, did it move the location where the precombustion chamber exited the head to put the TDI injector? Ok, this may not make much sense, so let me rephrase it: if you have an IDI and a TDI head and flip them upside down, is the distance between the injector hole and the closest edge of the head (or piston center) in the TDI different than the distance from the precombustion chamber hole and the piston center/whatever?

true TDI ' s don't have precups and the injectors extend down into the TDI piston recess instead. .. you can't bolt on a TDI head to an IDI block... the injectors will hit the pistons

and using a IDI head on a TDI block with TDI pistons will lower pressures too low to fire. :?

Thank you for the assumption on my objective and for the explanation on the intricacies of IDI vs DI (TDI included) diesel engine design, but unfortunately I fail to see the relationship of your answer to my question.

If you get a chance to look at a TDI piston, you'll notice the bowl in the center.
According tot he previous post the nozzle sticks into this bowl.

If you get a chance to look at an IDI head; you'll notice the prechamber is off to the side.

So,...
no,
they aren't even close to the same area of the combustion chamber.

That might have answered it
