I'm running Bilstein HD's front and rear, and replacement springs and spring seats from an '85 on the front. It lifted the front about 2 inches. The rear is next; it'll get the same treatment (springs, that is).

The HD's are much firmer than the Sachs struts I had previously. I'd recommend KYB's or the Touring struts if you're looking for a smoother ride. The HD's handle great, at the cost of a plush ride.

bump for opinions on munroe sensa trac springs.

also has anyone messed with the heavy duty springs made for if you carry a lot of weight in the trunk? was thinking about getting them because i often times carry up to six glass carboys full of water back there( somewhere around 50 lbs a piece) and it rides super low my current springs are definitely toast though.

I'd pass them by and save up for KYB's.
I put a couple sets of Monroe shocks on various vehicles, and while they work pretty good for a while, they don't tend to last as long as KYB's or Bilsteins. Sachs lower end shocks and inserts are in the same class, AFAIC.
The sad thing is that I spent the same $ for the Monroe Sensatracs on the back of my bunny as a set of KYB's. Go figure.

If you're going to be carrying lots of weight in the back on a frequent basis, a set of Bilstein HD's would serve you very well. Three hundred pounds is a bunch, although the HD's might be overkill if you carry heavy stuff infrequently.
You might investigate installing springs out of a '85-'92 Golf, as it will add around 4" to your bunny's stance. I have them on the front and back, and they've been a big help, especially in the snow.

KYBs all around. Seem pretty good.

I ghetto-jacked my Jetta by putting the rear perches ~3 inches higher. Not pretty, but I don't bottom out.

You certainly could. I'd forgotten about Tyler's mod (brilliant, BTW), but it's pretty easy to do and accomplishes pretty much the same thing a spring change would.
You need it, too. I was in the same boat, had my tools, small alligator jack, and spare fluids in the back, and it was way too low.
Go for it, and post your pics.
But go with the KYB's, you'll be happy you did.

thanks for the info ill post some pics whenever i get the job done hopefully this weekend. bought some front strut mounts, ball joints, tie rod ends and sway bar links. i think im gonna throw in the front mounts and do this mod this weekend do the other stuff some other time soon. think im going to have to throw in a couple wheel bearings in the front. i might cut the couplers down to raise it up 2 inches instead of 3 thats a bit much for me lol.

So, in general, raising the car with washers or pipe/spring seat provides just as good a ride as with new springs? I had considered buying the pair of preassembled strut/spring columns from that other parts website, but $200 is a hefty price to pay for a comfortable ride, esp if I can just get new struts and raise the springs up a bit.

3" lift resulted in about 1" higher than level, in my case.

The ride seems about the same as new springs, but the travel is 3" less.
Have a nice day.

ever heard of anyone breaking a spring from overloading? that was my fear when I had my car packed to the brim (back seat and trunk) with heavy tools.

no but I ripped the axle beam out from my 83 GTI. Had 500 lbs in the trunk and maybe a hundred or so in the back seat. One good hole in a township road and that was the end of it.
